A tall goblet made of sterling silver 800, at the Lower Silesian company Carl Frey & Söhne, which had its headquarters in Breslau, among other places. The company celebrated its 125th anniversary in 1924, which is around the year the auctioned item was likely made. The Breslau branch of the company operated until 1945. On the front of the cup, an engraved dedication to Carl von Jordan reads:
"Dem Kreisdeputirten
Herrn Carl von Jordan
zum 80. Geburtstage
in Dankbarer Vereihrung
gewidmet
vom Kreis Kreuzburg O/Schl. 15 Januar 1920"
Translated: Dedicated to the District Delegate Mr. Carl von Jordan on the occasion of his 80th birthday in expressions of grateful admiration from the Kreuzburg (Kluczbork) district / January 15, 1920.
We have not been able to find a specific person with this name, but we can surmise, from the weight and quality of the item's workmanship, that this was a wealthy person, of noble origin (?) and probably a supporter of patriotic ideas, which may suggest to us the soldering into the goblet of coins and medals with images of Prussian rulers.
We only came across details of a person with the same name, surname and date of birth - January 15, 1840, in the city of Königsberg.
The cup is made in silver, gilded on the inside, with three coins and two medals inserted:
- Thaler 1786, Frederick II the Great,
- Thaler 1796, Frederick William II,
- Rifleman medal without date, Frederick William III,
- Medal 1897 - on the 100th anniversary of the birth of Wilhelm I,
- 5 marks 1901, Wilhelm II - nuptial.
Silver, height 20.5 cm, filler diameter 100 mm, weight 580 g.
