Theodoric the Great was king of the Ostrogoths from 474 to 526. He was born in Pannonia, but at the age of 7 was sent as a hostage to Constantinople. There he received a careful education, which shaped his vision of the state. Theodoric ruled his country with great wisdom and skill. He was a visionary who wished to combine Roman and Germanic cultures. Therefore, he gathered outstanding scholars and artists in his court.
