Lot description
Grade: XF
Reference: RIC 207, J.Guillemain, MPR 311 (only 7 ex. cited)

Sol was the favorite and most frequently depicted God of the Roman pantheon in Probus' coinage. There are numerous variants of reverses with Sol; however the depiction of Sol in quadriga (left or central/spread) remains undoubtedly an iconic, classic reverse for Probus. This reverse type was struck in Lugdunum, Rome, Ticinum, Siscia, Serdica and Kyzikos mints, with each mint having its own unique style.

Beautiful example with full silvering! Guillemain cites only 7 examples!

Obverse: IMP PROBVS AVG

Radiate bust left in imperial mantle, holding eagle-tipped sceptre (scipio).

Reverse: SOLI INVICTO / R*B

Sol in spread quadriga, holding whip and globe in left hand, right hand raised.

Bilon, diameter 22,8 mm, weight 4,02 g.
