Here is one of the rarest coins sold during our 2022 winter auction.
The 1581 Batory crown jewel!
A coin not seen in the trade, not described in specialized catalogs.
Importantly, the very vintage of this coin (not just the variety) is very rare.
We do not know its auction quotations. It is missing from the archives of Onebid, WCN, Niemczyk, Sixbid. It occurred only once in our history, but it was the type with a Pogo, not with two shields, as on the present piece (sold for 30,000 zloty + fee).
In addition, this variety (with the Przegonia coat of arms on the obverse, legends ending in POL / POLO) is not noted by both the specialized catalog on the Batory minting (Parchimowicz-Brzezinski), as well as former studies (Kurpiewski or Czapski).
This type of shilling (Przegonia coat of arms under a large monogram) is minted in the 1582 vintage, but still there it is changed to a small monogram. The issue in 1581, which is the vintage of the search for the style of the shillings (hence the shillings with Pogonia, the coat of arms of the Batoris) is scarce, probably a trial/pilot.
