Issue from the year of the end of the Eighty Years’ War in the Netherlands (1568– 1648), which ended on October 24, 1648 with the signing of a peace treaty. This confirmed the existence of the Republic of the United Provinces of the Netherlands as a territory independent of Spain. Thus, the status that the Republic had actually had for many decades was formally recognized.
Steven Arndts’ first year of work as a die sinker, and an immediate change in picture. On the reverse, 12 dots are evenly spaced around a square with an inscription. In the years 1648–1650 in Gelderland, typologically different ducats were minted. In 1648 three types were minted: with a knight holding 7 or 3 arrows and with an emperor (wearing a crown). The presented specimen is minted with the image of the emperor. Mint condition, lots of mint luster. Slight imperfections, but with clear, sharp details.
