On October 21, 1635, Willem van Bijlaer, mintmaster of the mint in Dordrecht, son of the local die sinker in the years 1577–1617, Gerard van Bijlaer, died. The presented coin is probably his last ducat issue. Dutch provincial ducats minted before 1637 are rarely found in collections.
